Snow Report 20th April 2023
We’ve had another mixed week of wintery and spring weather, in fact it’s been quite a cold spring so far with a few fresh sunny days. The promised snow arrived last weekend giving us some powder days for those early morning skiers. The cold weather remaining with us has meant that the snow is still in good condition. We had freezing levels ranging between 1300 - 2500 metres and temperatures ranging -10°C to zero at mid station level of 2250 metres.
Today we have snow and around 10cms of snow this evening over 1700 metres. Temperatures are getting a little milder and the freezing level is rising but we can still expect around 20 - 30cms of snow on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday over around 2000 metres. Winds will increase a little on Tuesday.
The avalanche risk remains considerable in most places, do heed the warnings in the resort. It is late April now and with new snow on top of a weakening base layer, higher winds after the weekend and warming temperatures, conditions off-piste could be challenging and in places dangerous.

Top tips for skiing this week
- The temperature is changeable in the mountains. We’re technically spring skiing, although it still feels cold, it’s definitely chilly out of the sun and there is not much sun forecast for the next few days. So a mixture of thickness layers, and a shell jacket rather than a thick winter coat. You’ll need a waterproof jacket Saturday through to Tuesday!
- Don't forget the sunscreen! For when the sun does make an appearance. Even when the windchill is high, the sun in the mountains is still intense.
- You’ll need your goggle lenses mainly for flat light this week
- Early morning the pistes are harder packed and maybe a bit icy and then a bit slushy in the afternoons lower down. So coordinate your ski time to whichever conditions you prefer.
- Get your skis and boards waxed as the wetter snow can slow you down a bit!
- Check the forecast and choose the right day to book the sunny restaurant terrace for lunch
